Run 81. Tram route 57. 29/2/2020.
Getting a bit behind on the tram routes so headed west to run tram 57. Easy public transport start but once I started I realised that even with physical tram tracks to follow it wasn’t always that easy. Another line that required unnecessary risks to stay on the tram tracks but once I got to Maribyrnong Rd it was obvious where the tram was going. Or so I thought. At the intersection of Union Rd I fully intended to go straight until out of the corner of my eye I saw a 57 tram to my right. Just as well it turned up or I would have gone the wrong way.
Cut through a park for a quick toilet break and ran into a “park run”, which would have been fun if I was going the same way. Finally made my way into the city past Flemington racecourse which gave me my bearings. Followed the tram track (and trams) all the way through to Flinders St station which left only 9km to go. Gotta love any runs to the west or north of the city for two reasons. They are always predominantly downhill and typically the route goes through the city guaranteeing at least one of those short Garmin kilometers. Perfect distance back to my home so no need for detours.
Ended up with a reasonable 1:42:04 but had I have paid attention to the time I could have broken the 1:42 mark. But any run through the city has at least 1 short kilometre, so can’t complain. Another fast time that won’t be ratified by the International Olympic Committee.
My Three Learnings
Trams are easier to follow than tram tracks.
Toilet stops can be disruptive.
Fun runs going in the opposite direction to you cause a problem.
