Run 42. Geelong Foreshore. 27/09/2019.
Continuing the regional theme I took the advantage of being near Geelong and ran along the foreshore. In Melbourne that would be a 70km+ run, but in Geelong, about 7 km and your done. Parked near GMHBA stadium and worked my way to the coast via the East Geelong Golf Club. Now it is a beautiful spot, but the sound of someone yelling “fore” is unsettling, even if you can’t see where they are.
Through the golf course and onto a path that goes along the shoreline with nice views of Geelong along the way. Another day with a change of weather coming through meant gusty winds and a constant struggle to control my heart rate. Made it all the way to the Graincorp facility before running out of path and headed back inland.
Another opportunity to run along the local train line and decided to take a selfie at Geelong station. But Geelong isn’t a one station town and the first station I got to was North Geelong – Geelong’s main station was still another 2.5km away and after a couple of wrong turns into deadend streets, I finally got my selfie.
Headed back to GMHBA stadium with a few detours to make up the 21.1km distance. It was a day before the AFL grand final but with Geelong being knocked out last week, their homeground was pretty quiet. Ran a predictable 1:53:47 but more importantly beat the rain that started as I headed back to Torquay.
My Three Learnings
Strong winds and beaches are a common mix.
Railway tracks cause lots of deadends. Hard to cross.
Hearing “fore” shouted as you run through a golf course is similar to being swooped by a magpie.
